Amid fierce persecution, the recipients of this letter faced an almost irresistible temptation to forsake Christianity altogether and return to the familiar stability of their Jewish traditions.  The author exhorts his readers to faithful endurance by underscoring the superiority of Christ (and all that accompanies faith in Him) over Old Testament “shadows” that exposed the need for and anticipated something better.  His reasoning throughout the letter reverberates with his thesis:  Jesus is better!

While most of the letter’s modern readers are not tempted to forsake Jesus for Judaism, the exhortation of Hebrews offers relevant application today.  Like our first-century counterparts, true believers today must anchor our faith to Truth, hold fast our confession of hope, and press on to maturity in Christ.  Difficult circumstances need not shatter our faith if we resolve to remember that no matter what, Jesus can always be trusted.  We too can endure to the end because Jesus is better!
