Five Minutes with Jesus: A Call to Deeper Spiritual Growth

Do a quick search for "Five-Minutes with Jesus" on Amazon, and you will be astonished by the sheer volume of such titles your search yields. Indeed, publishers are all too happy to mass-produce what the public demands. So, what are so many people seeking these days? They are pursuing a shortcut to spiritual growth. The hunger driving their search is good, but the resources they are grabbing to feed their souls are leaving them malnourished.

The Church Is Starving, Floundering in Biblical Illiteracy

So, what is the problem with the bulk of these best-selling devotionals? Isn't five minutes better than nothing? Maybe, but spending five minutes with God out of the 1,440 total minutes in a day is woefully inadequate. Understatement, right? (And is settling for "better than nothing" really a standard that pleases the Lord?)

Many Christian publishers, appealing to the “too busy” consumer, offer resources that require little to no investment of our most prized commodity—time. By just glancing at the current state of today's church, we can readily identify that these "fluff" materials are simply not effective. Honestly, do we look around in astonishment at the collective spiritual maturity of many people claiming to be Christian? To the contrary, the professing church is overwhelmingly starving and floundering in biblical illiteracy.

Wake Up! We Are in a Spiritual Battle

The Bible tells us as followers of Jesus that we are in a spiritual battle (cf. Ephesians 6:10-18). We cannot expect to stand firm apart from the equipping that comes from time (lots of time) spent in the living Word of God.

And take...the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God (Ephesians 6:17).

Moreover, is it not obvious that we cannot possibly stand on truths and promises that we don't really know? How can we trust in a God that exists mostly in our imaginations because we have not invested the time required to learn Him from His own Word? Diligent commitment to knowing the Scriptures is key to standing firm and growing spiritually.

Like newborn babies, long for the pure milk of the word, so that by it you may grow in respect to salvation (1 Peter 2:2).

Where Our Time Is Spent, There Our Heart Will Be Also

Finally, if nothing else, doesn’t the Lord deserve more of our time? Where are our priorities? Does He not say to “Seek first the Kingdom?” As stewards of the 1,440 minutes entrusted to us by God, does it please Him when we grab a “Five Minutes with Jesus” devotional and check the box for having spent time with Him? Five minutes is .347% of our day—not even half of a percent.

Now, let's ask ourselves the hard question: "What percent of my day do I spend on things that have no value to my spirit?" Ouch! How convicting and unsettling to realize that where we invest our time reveals what we truly worship.
