For the past decade or so, “community” has increasingly found its way into the vocabulary of the church. But is community really synonymous with biblical words like "fellowship" and the "body of Christ"? While well-intentioned, the church needs to be careful not to neglect biblical teachings in their quest to appear more relevant to the secular world. As believers in Christ, we are called to so much more than mere community.

We as believers need to think differently about the Great Commission and how it applies to us. This short article hopes to broaden our understanding and application of Jesus' calling on our lives. More than evangelism, this calling is to make followers of Christ. While it certainly might include “going,” for most people the Great Commission means looking for opportunities “as you go” to teach others about what it means to be a true follower of the Lord Jesus.

The Lord says to “Seek first the Kingdom.” There are 1,440 minutes in each day. Does it please Him when we grab a “Five Minutes with Jesus” devotional and check the box for having spent time with God? Five minutes is .347% of our day—not even 1/2 of a percent. What percent of your day do you spend on things that have no value to your soul? Where we invest our time reveals what we truly worship. Where our time is spent, there our hearts will be also.
