A foundational principle in Bible study is the absolute consistency of Scripture. Namely, the Bible acts as interpreter of itself and will never be found to contradict itself. Therefore, the Bible itself is a primary resource in Bible study through the exercise of cross-referencing.
What Is Cross-Referencing?
Cross-referencing is a method used in Bible study to connect different verses that share similar words, subjects, or themes. This study technique helps readers gain a deeper understanding of Scripture by revealing relationships between passages. In addition, this study method provides contextual clarity, helps trace biblical themes throughout Scripture, and often prevents errors in Bible interpretation.

The Bible Conversations Series' Approach to Cross-Referencing
The above sample, taken from the Bible Conversations Series study on the Gospel of John (Part 1), demonstrates our approach to cross-referencing as a part of the Inductive Bible Study method. We discussed "Unlocking Meaning," the word study component of this page in a previous article. Now, the lower portion of this worksheet consists of cross-referencing that pertains to a key subject in the lesson's passage. In this example, the cited references for study primarily develop background information about John the Baptist who is prominently featured in the first chapter of the Gospel of John, including prophecies about this key figure's introduction of Messiah to Israel.
Depending on the particular passage of study, the "Making Connections" section might explore the source and context of an Old Testament quotation. Conversely, when studying the Old Testament, a fulfilled prophecy in the New Testament could be the topic of further exploration. When studying the Gospels, the cross-referencing might include harmony of parallel Gospel events. Sometimes there is a key word from the passage that merits exploration in other biblical texts. The possibilities are varied, but always the goal is to enhance our understanding of the passage we are studying by looking at it through the lens of the Bible as a whole.
Following the guided exercise, a second bullet point is provided for conducting one's own cross-referencing on a word, theme, or topic from John 1. Key words from the text provide enlightening research that can deepen understanding of the text through the use of a concordance. Other cross-referencing resources, like those mentioned above, unlock a myriad of connections to similar themes and subjects found elsewhere in Scripture.
Conclusion
Cross-referencing enriches Bible study by linking words, topics, and themes, providing a more comprehensive understanding of Scripture. It also encourages deeper exploration and connection within the biblical text. While avoiding misinterpretation of the Bible is reason enough to pursue cross-referencing, this vital study method also reveals that God's Word is perfectly consistent, never contradictory. What a faith builder as we grow in true knowledge of the Lord through Bible cross-referencing!

In our next article, we will be highlighting the final step of the Inductive Bible Study method: Application. While learning new things can be exciting and mentally stimulating, Bible knowledge was never intended to just stay in our minds. God reveals Himself and His Truth through the Scriptures for the purpose of changing us—how we think, our attitudes, and the way we behave. After all, what we DO with what we know about Him and His way is the whole point of Bible study. Knowledge + Application = Wisdom.
